Safety

The short version

  • Bren’s Table is for adults aged 18 and over.
  • The storyteller and portrait painter are AI with built-in safeguards, and our own rules on top.
  • If the game shows you something wrong or upsetting, email brenstable@gmail.com and we’ll look into it.
  • It’s a game. If you’re struggling, step away and talk to someone; help lines are listed below.

1. A table for adults

You must be 18 or over to play, and by signing in you confirm that you are, as our Terms require. You sign in with a Google account, which keeps one person to one account. The stories are written for adults and can include violence, peril and dark themes, as our Content Policy explains. If you believe someone under 18 is using Bren’s Table, please tell us at brenstable@gmail.com and we’ll close the account.

2. How the AI is kept in check

Every character at the table is AI, and you are always told so. Several layers stand between a request and what you see:

  • The storyteller. Stories are written by Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, which is trained to refuse harmful requests. Our instructions to it keep the game a fantasy adventure: it stays in the world of the game, keeps romance tasteful and follows your lead within our rules.
  • The portrait painter. Portraits are painted by an AI image model on fal.ai with its safety checker turned on, which blocks explicit images. We build each portrait prompt from your character’s description, in a painted fantasy style.
  • Our providers’ rules. Both providers have their own usage policies, such as Anthropic’s Usage Policy, which apply to everything sent through the game.
  • Limits. Only signed-in players can play, each account has a set number of rounds, and our servers limit how many requests can be made, which makes the game hard to misuse at scale.

No filter is perfect. AI can still occasionally produce something inaccurate, unexpected or unsettling. When it does, we want to hear about it.

3. Reporting a problem

Email brenstable@gmail.com if the game showed you content that breaks our Content Policy, if something in a story or portrait upset you, or if you think someone is misusing Bren’s Table. Please include:

  • what happened, and roughly when;
  • the campaign or character it happened in;
  • a screenshot or the words involved, if you have them.

We read every report, reply to let you know we’ve received it, and use it to improve the game’s safeguards. Where content may be illegal or someone may be at risk, we act on it first and report it to the authorities where the law requires. Copyright complaints have their own process on our Copyright page.

4. Looking after yourself

  • You’re in control. You can steer away from any scene, end a campaign, or step away at any time. Your game is saved after every turn, so nothing is lost by taking a break.
  • It’s fiction. Nothing Bren or any character says is advice of any kind (medical, legal, financial or otherwise). Bren is not a person and can’t replace one.
  • Keep real life out of the story. Don’t type real personal information about yourself or anyone else, such as addresses, phone numbers or health details. Everything you write is sent to our AI providers. Our Privacy Policy explains how your data is handled.
  • Play in moderation. If the game stops being fun, or you find yourself spending more time or money on it than you’d like, take a break.

5. If you need help

If something in a story touches on something you’re going through, or you’re worried about your own safety or someone else’s, please step away from the game and talk to someone you trust, or reach out to a free, confidential service:

  • United Kingdom and Ireland: Samaritans, any time, on 116 123.
  • United States and Canada: call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
  • Nordic countries: Mieli in Finland (09 2525 0111), Mind Självmordslinjen in Sweden (90101), Mental Helse in Norway (116 123) and Livslinien in Denmark (70 201 201).
  • Elsewhere, or in an emergency: contact your local emergency services.

6. Using AI responsibly

We built Bren’s Table to be a good storyteller, not to pretend to be a person or to keep you playing. We tell you plainly that every character is AI, we don’t use what you write to train AI models, and we don’t sell your data. Our Content Policy sets out what the AI will and won’t make, and we review reports to make the game safer over time.
