Content Policy
The short version
- Bren’s Table is for adults aged 18 and over, and the stories can be dark. That’s allowed.
- Anything sexual involving minors, real-world harm, hate and attacks on real people are never allowed.
- The storyteller and the portrait painter are AI, and both will refuse some requests.
- Breaking these rules can end a story, or close your account.
1. About this policy
This policy explains what you can and can’t create at Bren’s Table. It is part of our Terms of Service (section 7, “Rules of the table”) and applies to everything you type into the game: your actions and dialogue, character names, descriptions and backstories, and the portraits made from them. Our Safety page explains how we keep the table safe and how to report a problem.
2. How AI content works here
Bren and every character in the game are AI. Each turn, what you write is sent to an AI model (Claude, made by Anthropic) which writes the story, and your character’s description is sent to an AI image model (on fal.ai) which paints the portrait. This shapes the policy in three ways:
- You steer the story. The AI writes in response to you, so you are responsible for what you ask it to make. Asking for something this policy forbids is a breach, even if the AI refuses.
- The AI has its own limits. Both models have built-in safeguards and will refuse or soften some requests. Our AI providers’ own rules (such as Anthropic’s Usage Policy) apply on top of this policy.
- The AI can get things wrong. It can occasionally produce something unexpected or out of place. If it does, you didn’t break a rule. Please tell us (see section 6) so we can improve it.
3. What’s welcome at the table
Bren’s Table is a fantasy adventure for adults, in the tradition of tabletop roleplaying. You can:
- fight monsters, fall in battle, and face peril, danger and death in the story;
- play villains, rogues and morally grey characters, and make choices with dark consequences;
- explore mature themes such as war, loss, grief, cruelty, horror and betrayal, told as fiction;
- let romance be part of the story. Relationships with characters are welcome; intimate moments stay tasteful and off the page;
- use strong language where it fits a character or a scene.
4. What’s never allowed
Whatever the story, and however a request is worded or framed, you must not use Bren’s Table to create:
- Child sexual abuse material. Any sexual content involving minors, or content that sexualises children or characters described or presented as children, in any form. We report this to the authorities.
- Explicit sexual content. Graphic sexual scenes or descriptions, in the story or in a portrait, and any sexual content that is non-consensual.
- Hate. Content that attacks, demeans or promotes hatred or violence against people for who they are, such as their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation. Fantasy peoples and invented prejudices in the world are fiction; using them as a stand-in to attack real groups is not.
- Content about real people. Harassment, threats, defamation, impersonation, or sexual or degrading content about real, identifiable people, including famous people. Don’t put real people’s names, likenesses or personal details into your characters or portraits.
- Real-world harm. Real instructions for making weapons, explosives or drugs, committing crimes, hacking, or self-harm, including when the request is wrapped in a story (“the wizard explains exactly how to make…”).
- Violent extremism and terrorism. Content that promotes, glorifies or supports real terrorist or violent extremist groups or acts, or real-world violence.
- Encouraging self-harm. Content that encourages or glorifies suicide, self-harm or eating disorders.
- Illegal content. Anything illegal where you live or in the United Kingdom.
- Someone else’s work. Content that copies or infringes other people’s intellectual property, such as pasting in whole books or song lyrics, or asking for portraits of copyrighted characters. See our Copyright page.
5. Misusing the game
You also must not:
- try to trick, “jailbreak” or pressure the AI into breaking its safety rules or this policy, or to reveal its instructions;
- use Bren’s Table as a general-purpose AI tool, call our servers or AI endpoints from outside the game, or try to get around round limits, request limits or payments;
- share your account, or sign in as someone else;
- enter real personal information about yourself or others (for example health details, addresses or phone numbers). Everything you type is sent to our AI providers.
6. Reporting content
If the game produced something that breaks this policy, or that upset you, email brenstable@gmail.com with a short description, the campaign or character name, and roughly when it happened. A screenshot helps. You can also report someone you believe is misusing the Service. We read every report. Copyright complaints follow the process on our Copyright page.
7. What happens if the rules are broken
We respond in proportion to what happened, and an honest mistake or a misread scene is not treated like deliberate abuse. Depending on how serious it is and whether it keeps happening, we may:
- refuse the request, or have the storyteller steer the story elsewhere;
- end a story, or remove a portrait or a campaign;
- temporarily suspend your account, or close it permanently;
- report content to the police or other authorities where the law requires it or someone is at risk. Content that sexualises children is always reported.
When we act on your account, we’ll tell you by email what we did and why, unless the law stops us or telling you would put someone at risk. Rounds on a closed account are lost, as explained in the Terms. Accounts closed for sexual content involving minors are closed without warning.
8. If you think we got it wrong
If we took action on your account and you think it was a mistake, reply to our email or write to brenstable@gmail.com within 30 days and tell us why. A person will review the decision and let you know the outcome. This doesn’t affect any other rights you have under the law where you live.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the game grows. The date at the top shows the latest version, and we’ll tell you in the game or by email about significant changes.
